Music Scholarships

Invest in your talent and we’ll help you get there.

The School of Music offers a variety of scholarships and assistantships to support talented and committed students. Whether you’re an undergraduate, graduate student, or non-music major participating in ensembles, there may be funding opportunities available to help you pursue your passion.

Music Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Scholarships for incoming and current music majors are awarded based on a combination of musical ability, academic achievement, and departmental needs. All music majors must audition for scholarship consideration.

To be considered:

Scholarships are renewable based on continued musical and academic performance.

For more information, contact the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Dr. Jeffrey George at (337) 482-5210 or email jlgeorge@louisiana.edu.

Please note: priority for disbursement of scholarships will be given to students who audition by the final audition date each year. However, more funds often become available and are awarded throughout the year. Students may contact their major professor if they have questions regarding further scholarship opportunities.

On-Campus Housing Scholarships

Partial Housing Scholarships that cover the basic cost of a dorm room are available for eligible students. The Scholarships can be applied toward traditional dorms and the Legacy Park Apartments. Consult the Office of University Housing for current pricing of these residences.

Ensemble options for housing scholarship consideration vary based on audition, student preference, and departmental needs:

  • Membership in the Pride of Acadiana Marching Band in the fall, and the Concert Band or Symphonic Winds in the spring
  • Membership in the UL Lafayette Symphony Orchestra plus another ensemble (Wind Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble or Choir)
  • Membership in TWO School of Music ensembles per semester (this option requires a 2.3 GPA)
  • Membership in one ensemble, plus assigned work for 5 hours a week for two full semesters*

*This option is reserved only for students for whom two ensembles are not appropriate, as determined by their primary instrument and applied teacher. For example, a pianist or guitarist might not have two ensembles available to them.

Ensemble Participation Scholarships

Students from any major may be eligible for ensemble scholarships based on their audition and level of participation. These awards are available for involvement in major ensembles such as:

  • Wind Ensemble
  • Symphony Orchestra
  • Jazz Ensemble
  • Choirs (Chamber Singers, Chorale, Vermilion Voix)
  • Opera Theater
  • Traditional Music and other performance groups

Students must maintain satisfactory participation and fulfill ensemble commitments to retain these awards.

Marching Band Scholarships

  • Base Scholarship Award: Marching band members can receive a minimum of $600 per semester (fall only) upon successful participation and registration.
  • Meal Plan Award: Students who already have an Academic Housing Award may be eligible for an additional Meal Plan Award worth $1,720 per semester (or $3,440 per academic year).
  • Housing Awards: Two housing-based scholarships are available to support the cost of on-campus living at UL Lafayette. These awards can be used for most campus housing options, including Legacy Park apartment-style residences.
