The Music Performance concentration at UL Lafayette offers rigorous, individualized training designed to prepare you for a professional career as a classical or jazz musician or to continue to graduate study. We support your growth through private lessons, ensembles, and performance opportunities in a vibrant, culturally rich environment.

Who Should Apply

This program is ideal for serious musicians—vocalists or instrumentalists (band, orchestral, piano, guitar) dedicated to reaching a high level of artistry and performance. Audition required for admission.

What You’ll Study

  • Applied Lessons & Recital Seminar: Up to 8 credits of individualized instruction and recital experiences.
  • Advanced Music Coursework: Comprehensive study in music theory, analysis, keyboard skills, and music history.
  • Ensemble Participation: A minimum of eight ensemble semesters (e.g. orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber groups), tailored by instrument.

Degree Structure & Milestones

  • 120–132 total credit hours, including 45 credits at the 300/400 level.
  • Music Theory Diagnostic Exam helps place you in the correct core music theory and aural skills sequence.
  • Recital requirements and ensemble credits are evenly distributed over eight semesters to build growth and discipline.

Audition & Scholarship Info

Multiple audition dates are available each year. Accepted students are eligible for performance-based scholarships.

Indicate your interest in the Pride of Acadiana marching band during your audition for access to ensemble scholarships and awards.

Graduate & Career Readiness

Graduates move on to successful careers as performers, chamber musicians, educators, and composers, often earning spots in orchestras or graduate programs such as the University of Houston, LSU, and national music institutions.
