“Our university consists of many different clubs, activities, and interests that brings students together and help them get involved. There are many different factors about UL Lafayette that met my ideal expectations of the perfect university to help me achieve my goals.”

Where I'm From

I’m from Opelousas, La., where I found my passion for helping people.

Where I Am

I am an honors student studying sociology and psychology.

Where I'm Going

I will become a social worker and earn a graduate degree so I can help people.

Almaza Farhat chose to major in sociology because of her passion for helping people.

“Sociology allows me to study social behaviors and interactions,” she said. “This path gives me the opportunity to help people who are struggling with some aspects of their lives.”

To do that, she decided psychology was the perfect minor to pair with her sociology major

“Psychology can help me better understand people’s feelings to allow me to help people solve and cope with their problems,” she explained.

The combination of sociology and psychology will help Almaza with her future career goals.

“After I graduate, I plan to start working as social worker while trying to get my master’s degree,” she said. “I will utilize my degree by helping people who are struggling with problems in their everyday lives.”

Getting the Most from Her Degree

To get the most out of her sociology degree, Almaza is taking advantage of all the University has to offer.

“My favorite part about studying at UL Lafayette is that they offer so many services you can use,” she said. “They have the Learning Center, where they offer tutoring and study groups for many subjects and courses, the Academic Success Center where counselors and staff assist you in transitioning into life on campus, and they have many more wonderful services to help you in many ways.

“Our university consists of many different clubs, activities, and interests that brings students together and help them get involved,” she said. “There are many different factors about UL Lafayette that met my ideal expectations of the perfect university to help me achieve my goals.”

One of the ways Almaza stays involved is with the Honors Program

“The Honors Program provided me with the honors courses, which are smaller and encourage a stimulating learning experience,” she said. “They also have honors seminars that provide a weekly exposure to a wide variety of intellectual ideas with many students and faculty.”

Almaza also recently joined the National Society of Leadership and Success to hone her leadership skills and get support from other members to achieve her dreams.

“They provide leadership training, exclusive scholarships, networking events, and more to help members excel in their future,” she said.
