The University of Louisiana at Lafayette respects your privacy and you can visit official, public University sites without revealing any personal information.  

Our commitment to privacy aligns with the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), the University’s Data Classification Policy, and other relevant University policies. 

This privacy statement applies to all websites on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s louisiana.edu domains.

The first time you visit the University’s website, a cookie was probably set on your computer; when you return to the UL Lafayette website, the cookie is read again.

We use cookies on our websites for a variety of reasons. The cookies we use do not store personally identifiable information and they cannot harm your computer. Cookies help us make our website more informative, personal, and user-friendly.  

Some UL Lafayette pages use permanent cookies. This is done to recognize you and your authorized access on the UL Lafayette site and help prevent you from needing to constantly re-enter your password on every official University site. UL Lafayette also uses third-party cookies to track website analytics through the Google Analytics service. UL Lafayette uses Google Analytics, which uses cookies to collect the following information:

This information is non-personal and used to improve content and user experience. The University only transmits this information to Google, Inc. and it is stored on their servers.

External Websites & Social Media  

Some University pages may contain links to external websites. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette does not control the privacy practices or content for these external websites.  

Third-party cookies may be placed by websites other than UL Lafayette’s. If the third-party is authorized, they may place third-party cookies that contain personal information, which the University may have access to.  

Third-party cookies may also be placed by social media services, which the University utilizes, including:

Photography  

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette reserves the right to photograph members of the University community, including but not limited to, its students and faculty, in situations appropriate to the image of an academic institution. These photos may be used in University publications, marketing materials, social media or on the University website.

The University will, to the extent feasible, honor requests from those who do not wish to have their images photographed or published.

How to have your photo removed

If your photograph has been published on the University’s website, social media, or in other marketing materials and you wish to have it removed, email website@louisiana.edu with a link to the page or post that contains the relevant photo.  

Text messaging   

The University's text messaging service gives you the option to subscribe to receive text messages from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (“UL Lafayette”) on your mobile device regarding the admission process. Subscribing to this service is not required to apply for or gain admission to UL Lafayette.

What private information we collect

You may choose to submit personal information on pages where it is requested. This could be any information that personally identifies you or allows you to be personally contacted.  

Any personal or identifying information you choose to share with us will only be used for the purposes specified on the submission page.

We do not share any personal information with any unaffiliated third party. Information submitted will be encrypted where required by state law.

Email addresses appearing on the University’s site are published to facilitate private, individual communication between the University community and our visitors. UL Lafayette websites are designed to prohibit the non-approved automated harvesting of email addresses from the University’s sites.  

Your rights related to private information

As a UL Lafayette website user, you have the right to access your personal information held by the University. You also have the right to ask the University to correct any inaccuracies in your held personal information.  

In some cases, you may:  

  • Request that the University delete your personal information
  • Request that the University restrict processing your personal information
  • Object to the University processing your personal information.  

There are several laws, including the Family Educational and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”) that give website users certain rights pertaining to their personal information.

How to remove your private information

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette uses appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal data from being accessed by unauthorized persons and processing, accidental loss, and destruction and damage.  

We also make all reasonable efforts to protect personal data from external threats, such as malicious software or hacking. Inherent risks, however, are always present when sending information through public networks or using public computers, and thus we cannot guarantee 100% security of all data sent to us.  

To increase the security of your data, the University retains your personal data no longer than:

  • is necessary for the purposes for which it was provided  
  • is necessary to perform our obligations to you (or to enforce or defend legal claims)
  • as is required by applicable law.

The criteria used to determine the amount of time your data is retained is based on:

  • various legislative requirements
  • the purpose for which the data was provided and whether retaining the data is needed in connection with that purpose
  • further specific guidance issued by relevant regulatory authorities on data retention/erasure including, but not limited to, EU regulatory authorities.  

When your personal data is no longer needed by the University, it is either erased and/or anonymized so it can no longer be used to identify you.  

You may wish to limit the use of your personal data in accordance with this privacy policy.

  2. The right of access – You may request the contents of your personal data, how we use that data, and who it may be shared with.
  3. The right to rectification – You may request that we correct personal data that we have if it is inaccurate or incomplete.  
  4. The right to erasure – You may request that we erase your personal data that we no longer need.
  5. The right to restriction of processing – You may request that we temporarily stop processing your data if it is inaccurate or we don’t need it.  
  6. The right to data portability – You may request your personal data be electronically sent to another data controller.  
  7. The right to object – You may object to how we use your personal data unless we have compelling legitimate grounds to continue processing.
  8. The right to avoid automated decision-making – You may object to the automated processing of your personal data.
