Homecoming Week continues with pep rallies, golf and tennis

Ragin’ Cajuns fans will get a chance to “Yell Like Hell” at one of two pep rallies planned for Homecoming Week.

The traditional Yell Like Hell pep rally was started in 1969 by Delta Delta Delta sorority. This year, it will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the Student Union porch and in the courtyard. Anyone can attend the free event.

Louisiana football players, members of the Homecoming Court, cheerleaders, and the Ragin’ Jazz dance team will take part. Attendees will enjoy the sounds of the Pride of Acadiana Marching Band, and music by a DJ.

They will also soak up plenty of atmosphere, said Karli Sherman, assistant director of the University Program Council’s Office of Student Engagement and Leadership. The UPC coordinates the event.

“It’s a cool place to have a pep rally, with Cypress Lake as a backdrop and Student Union windows painted as part of a spirit display,” Sherman said.

The following day begins with two events for sports enthusiasts, the annual tennis and golf tournaments. The Bill Bass Open Golf Tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m at Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course.

Participants will enjoy food and camaraderie before a noon tee time for the four-person scramble. Pre-registration is encouraged.

The UL Alumni Homecoming Tennis Tournament will begin at 8 a.m. at Red Lerille’s Health and Racquet Club. Mixed doubles teams will play the best two out of three matches.

“Once again we are expecting a fun Friday for the tournament. All spots are filled, and we have many return players as well as some newcomers,” said event chair John Claude Arceneaux, the UL Lafayette Alumni Association’s assistant director for outreach.

That night, a UL Lafayette pep rally will feature Ragin’ Cajuns football players, coaches and cheerleaders. It will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. during Downtown Alive! Fans can also catch Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band at Parc Sans Souci.

The Young Alumni Pub Crawl will begin at 8 p.m. Alums at least 21 years old can walk from spot to spot downtown. Pre-registration is encouraged.
