Curiosity drives magazine’s student editor

With roots in two continents, Angeline Mathews brings a rich, bicultural perspective to her writing and role as La Louisiane student editor for the Fall 2025 issue.

Mathews was born in Lafayette, but spent 12 years of her childhood in Lagos, Nigeria. She eventually returned to Lafayette, where she attended St. Leo Seton Catholic School and Teurlings Catholic High School.

Although she has always been drawn to creative storytelling, Mathews wasn’t certain of her career path until she discovered a passion for journalism when she enrolled at UL Lafayette to pursue a degree in mass communication. Introductory classes during her freshman year confirmed her affinity for the field.

Mathews’ work has been published in The Current, a nonprofit newsroom based in Lafayette. She also completed a 10-week internship at The Acadiana Advocate, which provided invaluable experience and helped her develop more essential journalistic skills.

“I approach journalism – whether reporting from campus or in the community – through the lens of a lifelong learner,” the student editor said. “I enjoy asking questions, shining light on important issues and telling stories that connect people across their differences.”

Dr. James Savage, La Louisiane’s editor, called Mathews “a gifted storyteller.”

“It’s been a delight to watch Angeline grow in her craft during her tenure as student editor,” he said. “She has been instrumental in the magazine’s commitment to producing more digital and social media content to accompany the print publication. With her impressive mastery of traditional and emerging storytelling tools, Angeline has a bright future ahead of her.”

Among her stories in this issue: pieces that explore student mental health resources at UL Lafayette. Coverage begins on page 14.

The student editor participates in nearly every aspect of La Louisiane’s production. In addition to writing and editing stories and other content, the student editor conducts interviews, fact-checks stories, proofs pages and assists during photo and video shoots. The student editor is a liaison between La Louisiane and the student body.
