University pays tribute to retirees

Dr. Joseph Savoie, president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, spoke to University employees who retired in the past academic year, thanking them for their dedication and service.

He addressed the group during a reception held at the Picard Center on Monday.

“Whether you’ve worked here 10 years or 40 years, you’ve helped the University make steady progress,” he said.

One retiree began working at the University in 1969. Ten started their UL Lafayette careers in the 1970s, 15 were employed by the school in the 1980s, and about a dozen were hired in the 1990s.

“One thing that has stayed the same over the years has been our University’s compassion for students, especially first-generation students. For them, college is a brave new world and you helped many of them become the first in their families to earn academic degrees,” Savoie said.

The president noted that he frequently has a chance to talk to UL Lafayette alumni.

“It’s interesting to hear what they remember about being a student here. . . It doesn’t take long and they’re telling me about a favorite professor who helped them get through a tough course or a staff member who encouraged them to keep going when they wanted to give up.

“You should be very proud of your work here. You have made a difference to so many people and in so many ways.

“On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, I thank you for all your hard work, dedication, your sacrifices and your loyalty.”

Among long-time employees who were honored: Dr. Carolyn Bruder, former provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Dr. Phoebe Hayes, former dean of the College of General Studies; Dr. Victor Schneider, a math professor; and Lucien Gastineau, director of the Cajun Card and former head of Parking and Transit.
