Lafayette native and author Tim Allis’ 2024 biography Henri Bendel and the Worlds He Fashioned has been named one of the best biographies of the year by Foreward Reviews magazine. Published through UL Press, the book earned a Foreword INDIES gold award in the biography category.
“We are grateful Tim brought this story, with exceptional prose and years of research, to UL Press for publication. Though the work of UL Press is done for the love of books, we appreciate this recognition,” said Dr. Joshua Caffery, director of UL Press and the Center for Louisiana Studies at UL Lafayette.

Allis’ detailing of Bendel’s upbringing and life’s work has previously received acclaim from Vogue, Vanity Fair and The Wall Street Journal. The book reflects the spirit of a larger-than-life innovator whose style and influence transformed the fashion industry from the turn of the 20th century to his passing in 1936.
Henri Bendel, Inc., the Manhattan-based store which defined modern retail, survived Bendel until its closure in 2019. The book features period photographs, illustrations, concept art and advertisements from the full 123-year history of the famous department store. It also highlights Bendel’s connections to the Lafayette region and how his early years in Louisiana shaped his career.
