Dr. Mark Zappi, professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is the recipient of the 2026 Louisiana Engineering Foundation Faculty Professionalism Award. The honor recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in professional licensure, leadership and service to the engineering profession.
A licensed professional engineer, Zappi joined the College of Engineering as dean and professor in 2005. He served as dean for 13 years, leading the college through a period of growth while advancing its research and industry engagement efforts.
Zappi continues to serve UL Lafayette as executive director of the Energy Institute of Louisiana, director of the Center for Environmental Protection and director of the Louisiana Energy Extension Service. His research focuses on energy systems, environmental protection and applied engineering solutions developed in partnership with industry to reduce the environmental impacts of industrial activity and support workforce development.
Through his leadership and continued guidance of applied research initiatives, industry partnerships and workforce development efforts, Zappi has helped position UL Lafayette as a leader in energy innovation and environmental stewardship, said Dr. Ahmed Khattab, dean of the College of Engineering.
“Dr. Zappi’s achievements reflect the values of our institution and the engineering profession,” Khattab said. “His dedication to licensure and professionalism exemplifies the applied, industry-engaged work that defines UL Lafayette as a Carnegie R1 research university and prepares students to succeed in the engineering workforce.”
“Professional licensure is central to engineering integrity,” Zappi added. “I am honored to receive this award and proud to work alongside colleagues and students who are committed to advancing our profession and serving the public through responsible engineering.”
The recognition will be presented during the Louisiana Engineering Society Honors and Awards Ceremony on March 14.
