The University of Louisiana at Lafayette brought state and federal partners together this week to showcase how recent federal and state investment and industry partnerships are leveraging decades of research expertise to create new economic development and workforce opportunities for Louisiana.
The “Pioneering Louisiana” event on Tuesday highlighted University strengths in semiconductor and advanced manufacturing, energy and critical materials, biotechnology and biodefense, and defense and aerospace. Representatives from Louisiana’s congressional delegation, local state legislators, state agency leaders and industry partners attended.
“As a Carnegie R1 university, we have a responsibility to put the strength of our research enterprise to work for Louisiana,” University President Dr. Ramesh Kolluru said. “The true value of a public research university is measured by the opportunities it creates for the people and places it serves.”
UL Lafayette’s research enterprise exceeds $263 million annually, and the University generates more than $4.4 billion in annual economic impact across Louisiana.
“When we say ‘Research for a Reason,’ here’s what we mean: creating opportunity for our people and strengthening Louisiana. That’s the goal,” Kolluru added.
Presentations demonstrated how state and federal investments are building on innovation and expertise developed at UL Lafayette over decades to expand Louisiana’s workforce and economy.
Examples included the University’s Silicon Bayou Semiconductor Technology Center led by Dr. Jonathan Rausch; energy research and the Louisiana Energy Extension Service led by Dr. Mark Zappi; biotechnology research and emerging biomanufacturing opportunities at the New Iberia Research Center led by Jane Fontenot and Progress Point; the Accessible Healthcare through AI-Augmented Decisions Center, directed by Dr. Raju Gottumukkala; and expanding capabilities in defense and aerospace.
Attendees made their way through a showcase led by University students, faculty, researchers and partners, who demonstrated work underway across the featured areas. In addition, the “show and tell” included University-developed technology such as autonomous vessels and vehicles, including the award-winning CajunBot pioneered by Dr. Arun Lakhotia, and the student-led Cajun Advanced Picosatellite Experiment (CAPE), the state’s first and only university program in which students design, build and launch satellites into space.
Dr. Geoffrey Stewart, interim vice president for Advancement and Strategy, emphasized the University’s commitment — and responsibility — to put its expertise to work for Louisiana’s communities.
“Think of us as an institution you can call when you need help getting something done — a partner in serving your communities and the people who call them home,” Stewart said. “When we bring our strengths together, we can build a stronger future for Louisiana than any of us could build alone.”
