UL Lafayette to Consider Parking Surcharge to Help Athletics

In an effort to improve athletic facilities at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the administration is considering a parking surcharge at athletic events.

The nominal surcharge would be $2 per ticket for parking at football games and $1 per ticket for all other sporting events. UL Lafayette students would be exempt from the surcharge because they already pay a parking fee with tuition.

“ We are considering this move to help finance improvements to athletic facilities,” said UL Lafayette President Ray Authement. “In the past several years we have moved forward in our athletic development and marketing efforts and we feel this surcharge may now help us move forward with improving all athletic facilities.”

In the works for athletics is a multi-purpose indoor practice facility that would be used for all sports. The $3.6 million facility would allow athletic teams to practice despite inclement weather. The renovation of the current weight room is another athletic priority. The facility is expected to be doubled in size and used by both male and female athletes.

Authement said he expected to raise $250,000 annually if a surcharge were implemented. He expected a final decision to be made in Spring 2004. If approved, the surcharge would go into effect Fall 2004.
