The Center for Gifted Education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will once again provide enriching programs for Summer 2009. These programs offer a variety of academic and arts courses from which students may choose.

The Summer Scholars Residential Program is a week-long program for students in the 7th - 9th grades. This year Summer Scholars will be held June 7 – 12 and June 14 – 19. Student can sign up for either week.

The program identifies and nurtures academically gifted students who choose daily classes from a variety of academic and arts areas as well as a course in leadership. To qualify, a student must present satisfactory scores on a standardized test of mental ability or academic achievement from school.

Students who are classified as academically gifted by state standards automatically qualify for the program.

The program has proven highly successful, with both participants and parents reporting increases in academic motivation, self-concept and creative production. All Louisiana residents receive a discount on tuition and more scholarship funds are available for students whose families qualify on the basis of financial need.

Tuition is $425, which covers four courses and room and board. Among the courses offered are Electronics, Bits from Broadway, Mixed Media Explosion, Architecture of the Ages, Movie Making and Webpage Design.

The Academic Enrichment Program serves students currently in kindergarten through 8th grade. This program offers two-week afternoon sessions, Monday through Thursday. Mini-courses are offered in science, the arts, computing and many more areas of interest for the academically talented and creative students.

The Program will be held from June 8 – 18 and July 6 – 16. To qualify for this program, a student must be recommended by his/her classroom teacher or present satisfactory scores on a standardized test of mental ability or academic achievement.
