UL Lafayette’s student chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists earned the Outstanding Chapter Award for Region 12 recently.

The award was announced during a regional meeting held during the SPJ Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference in Anaheim, Calif.

Region 12 is composed of student chapters in four states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Annually, each of SPJ’s 12 regional directors selects one chapter in his or her region that has performed outstanding service to the Society, its campus, and the journalism profession.

A certificate presented to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s SPJ chapter cites “outstanding programs and activities that enhance professionalism, thereby contributing service to the Society and to the profession.”

SPJ’s vice president for campus chapter affairs names one of the top 12 chapters as  Outstanding Campus Chapter of the Year. DePaul University earned that honor this year.

Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.
