Sonic features Ragin' Cajun Burger

The Ragin' Cajun Burger is back.

The national restaurant chain Sonic is again offering the University of Louisiana at Lafayette-themed burgers.

They’re slathered with spicy mayo, topped with a slice of pepper jack cheese and stamped with an edible Ragin’ Cajuns® logo that is steamed onto the bun.

The burgers also have sparked a hot trend.

Lafayette was the first market to have college-themed burgers last year, according to a USA Today article. Now, other schools in Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma have entered the mix.

While Sonic is thought to be the first national chain to stamp logos onto hamburger buns, regional chains have done it in the past.

The idea isn’t new to Lafayette, either, says Matt Tarver, the University’s assistant director of Brand Management and Creative Services.

“It’s an extension of something Deano’s Pizza did several years ago, when it put edible logos on their pizzas,” Tarver said.

Specialty hamburgers like the Ragin’ Cajun Burger, or the new Sooner Brisket Cheeseburger emblazoned with a University of Oklahoma logo, nevertheless are concocted to appeal to regional tastes.

“We're a gathering spot in many smaller communities,” James O'Reilly, chief marketing officer at Sonic, explained in the USA Today article. “This will generate a lot of buzz.”
