Two new internship programs at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are offering students the opportunity to work with Louisiana political leaders.

The Future Leaders Internship Program is open to all majors and is designed to make college students more aware of the public process with state legislative leaders. Students will be interning in Baton Rouge and will receive a $750 stipend. The program starts on May 10 and concludes June 21. Three hours of graded course credit and three hours of pass/fail credit will apply.

Students will be able to interact with active legislators and learn about policy issues. Placements will be made with members of the General Assembly or with administrative/executive offices.

The second program is the UL Lafayette Political Policy and Leadership Internship.

This competitive and prestigious internship will send one student during each semester to live and work full-time in Washington D.C. in the congressional office of Dr. Charles Boustany, U.S. Representative.

Boustany’s office will pay students $1,500 per month for the duration of the semester. In addition, the Political Science department will award 12 hours of upper level political science credit for the internship and research that accompanies it.

Interns will work directly for Boustany’s chief of staff, Jeff Dobrozsi and will be involved in constituent correspondence, capitol tours, administrative work, legislative research and attendance at briefings and hearings.

Students will be responsible for their own housing and transportation but will have help from the department.

Applicants must have at least upper level standing and a 3.0 GPA. The individual selected for the internship will be notified quickly so they can plan for next semester. Applications are due by April 1 for the fall semester.
