“Movers, Shakers, History Makers” is the theme of Black History Month, and Dupre' Library is carrying out the theme on the first floor of the library with an exhibit to commemorate Black history.
The exhibit features works by two Lafayette artists, Adrian Fulton and Laura Camel. Fulton's large, colorful paintings depict such famous faces as Oprah Winfrey and Rosa Parks. His charcoal works depict Julian Bond and Stevie Wonder. The artwork accompanies the exhibit cases in the grand hall.
The work of sculptor Laura Camel is displayed in the stairwell. Camel creates beautiful clay busts of African-American men, women and children that she personalizes with names and stories.
In addition to the artwork, display cases in the library foyer and hall are filled with books, photographs, posters, drawings and memorabilia. A model of a slave cabin is on display in the stairwell.
The library is also sponsoring a program that will feature a panel discussion, music and dance. The theme, Movers, Shakers, History Makers, highlights the contributions of young adult African-Americans from the past to the present. The UL Lafayette faculty, staff and students, and the local community are invited to view the exhibit through February 28 during normal library hours and to attend the program on February 16 at 3 p.m.
