Library of Congress sings the praises of book published by UL Press

Published

A title published by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press has been placed on a prominent bookshelf.

“Bayou Song: Creative Explorations of the South Louisiana Landscape” was chosen for the “Discover Great Places for Reading” list compiled by the Library of Congress. The library is one of the largest in the world.

The 52-title list of books for children and young readers includes one from each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Selections must be written by authors from each place, set in those places, or focus on each region’s culture.

“Bayou Song” consists of poetry by Margaret Simon, illustrations by Anna Cantrell and photography by Henry Cancienne.

Their work is in good company.

Another title on the “great reads” list, for example: “Charlotte’s Web,” the tale by E.B. White about a friendship between a pig and a spider. It is regarded as one of the best children’s books ever written.

The Library of Congress Center for the Book will distribute its picks during the library’s 2018 National Book Festival. The annual event features author readings, book signings and exhibits for all ages. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 1 in Washington, D.C.
