Dr. Ray Bauer, a professor emeritus of biology at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will spend four months in Brazil this year, collaborating with researchers there to help support that nation's shrimping industry.

Bauer received the Fulbright-Brazil Scientific Mobility Program Distinguished Chair Award. The Fulbright Foundation fosters academic interchange between the United States and other countries.

He will be in Brazil from August to December, working with biologists from Brazilian universities. He will conduct research and teach a course for graduate students.

"We'll be studying commercially important shrimp species," Bauer explained. "There's quite a bit of basic biology research to be done, so that fisheries can be managed with a more scientific approach."

The award provides funds for travel to and within Brazil, research funds, living expenses and a stipend.

The research project could lead to collaboration between Brazilian universities at UL Lafayette.

“My hosts are applying for Brazilian funds to come here and work on a collaborative project for two to three months, which could lead to an interchange of biology graduate students between our universities.”
