First responders train for active shooter

Law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel will conduct “active shooter” drills on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s campus this week.

They will practice responding to simulated situations in which a gunman is threatening occupants of Griffin Hall.

The UL Lafayette Police Department, Acadian Ambulance, Lafayette General Medical Center, Lafayette Police Department and Lafayette Sheriff’s Office will participate in the training. Drills are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, and Thursday, Dec. 17.

“The purpose of the event is to continue being proficient when dealing with large events and multiple agencies. The goal would be fine-tuning any areas that may seem insufficient,” said John Witt, quality improvement coordinator with Acadian Ambulance.

Portions of Rex Street and E. Lewis streets will be closed during the training. Access to Griffin Hall will not be available during the hours of the exercise.

“The public is urged to avoid the area on those mornings,” said Sgt. Billy Abrams, public information officer for the UL Lafayette Police Department. “Most of the activity will take place inside the building, but there will be police and emergency vehicles on site.”

Nearby signs will announce when the drills are in progress.
