The Friends of the Humanities recently donated a collection of 21 books to Edith Garland Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in honor of Fred Daspit.
Daspit is a visual artist and retired professor of fine arts at UL Lafayette. He received his bachelor's degree in fine arts from then-University of Southwestern Louisiana and his master of fine arts degree from Louisiana State University. Daspit served as director of the UL Lafayette Visual Art Department's Fine Arts Gallery and spearheaded the creation of the Art Museum in the 1960s. He is the author of three books about historical Louisiana architecture published by the Center for Louisiana Studies.
The donated books, selected by UL Lafayette Professor Hector Lasala, include Architecture of the Everyday, A Thousand Years of Nonlinear History and Moment of Complexity. Past president of the Friends of the Humanities Suzan Allen stated, “The books represent the essence of Fred’s life, the depth and philosophy of his interests, particularly his interests in architecture and the humanities.”
Other members of the Friends of the Humanities who participated in the presentation were President Sylvia Bienvenu, Publicity Chair Linda Alessi and Webmaster Dr. Jim Lafleur. Dr. Charles Triche, Director of Libraries, received the donation.
