CSPAN2’s Book TV will feature Thomas Schoonover, an emeritus history professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, discussing his new book “Hitler's Man in Havana: Heinz Luning and Nazi Espionage in Latin America” on Sunday at 9 p.m.
His talk was recorded in January when he spoke at the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C.
In the book, Schoonover recalls the life of Heinz August Luning, a Nazi spy who posed as a Jewish refugee for the Third Reich in Cuba at the beginning of World War II. Sent to Cuba to collect information on the United States and the Allies, Heinz Luning was according to the author highly incompetent and was the only spy executed in Latin America during WWII. He would later become the inspiration for Graham Greene's "Our Man in Havana."
Schoonover is the author of numerous books, including "Uncle Sam's War of 1898 and the Origins of Globalization."
