The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is accepting applications for the College of Engineering’s new construction management concentration within its engineering and technology management bachelor’s degree program.

Courses will begin this fall for the concentration, which bolsters the bachelor degree program’s already innovative, diverse curriculum. The degree program also includes an embedded minor in business, which emphasizes managerial and financial skills.

The construction management concentration is “a strategic addition that’s indicative of the University’s commitment to offering degree programs structured to help our graduates attain career success,” said Dr. Jaimie Hebert, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

“The addition of the concentration also underscores the University’s essential role in helping to spur workforce development and economic growth,” Hebert added.

Dr. Ahmed Khattab, dean of the College of Engineering, said the Louisiana Workforce Commission predicts employment in the area of construction of buildings to increase by 17.8% between 2022 and 2032.

“The construction management concentration is tailored to help meet the demands of a thriving construction industry, particularly in the state, where highly trained and educated professionals are greatly needed to fill jobs that advance Louisiana's infrastructure and development,” Khattab said.

The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for a range of jobs, including construction project manager, scheduler, estimator, project controls specialist and construction safety specialist.

It features courses and labs that focus on subjects such as construction materials and methods; building information modeling; cost estimating and budgeting; project management, planning, and control; construction and industrial safety; and professional communication and teamwork.

Dr. Shelton Houston, head of the Department of Engineering Technology, said a key strength of the new concentration is that it blends elements of engineering, engineering technology and construction management.

“It integrates technical expertise, hands-on practical training and business acumen, all of which is designed to prepare our graduates impactful, leadership-driven careers,” Houston said.
