University of Louisiana at Lafayette students are invited to participate in the 2009 - 2010 Caffery Competition sponsored by Edith Garland Dupré Library and the University Library Committee.
The recipient of the Jefferson Caffery Research Award is provided $500 by a fund that Ambassador and Mrs. Jefferson Caffery established in 1967. The competition encourages UL Lafayette students to conduct scholarly research utilizing primary source materials held in the Special Collections Department of Dupré Library, which includes the Louisiana Room, the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collection, the Rare Book Collection and Microforms.
Resources are available which are of relevance and interest for researchers from all academic departments of the University. The Special Collections Department staff is available for consultation. Guidelines and further explanations of the competition are available in brochures available at the Reserve Desk on the first floor and in the Jefferson Caffery Reading Room on the third floor of the library.
The Caffery Competition is open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Entries for this year’s competition must be submitted to the library Director’s Office, room 215, Dupré Library, by March 1, 2010.
A panel consisting of the University Library Committee, the Head of Special Collections and others designated by the panel will review and judge the submissions. Papers will be judged on quality of research, clarity and writing skill. The extent of the author’s use of primary source materials in Dupré Library’s Special Collections will also be considered. Provided there is a paper deemed worthy of the award, the winner will be announced on April 6, 2010.
