The current exhibit in the main hall of Dupré Library at UL Lafayette, is part of a campus-wide celebration of Black History Month.
The display focuses on notable Black political and legal figures and on Black artists and writers. Short biographies and photos accompany library materials on the subjects. Two cases feature archival materials about Ernest Gaines. Included are pens Gaines used to write the early drafts of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. This exhibit runs through February 28. Andrea Flockton, Technical Services Special Projects Librarian, and Bruce Turner, Head of Special Collections, mounted the display.
Turner also created an exhibit in the stairwell display area, entitled “Four Acadiana Women.” It focuses on educator and college administrator Mary E. Dichmann; university faculty member and library founder Edith Garland Dupré; journalist and author/illustrator Mary Alice Fontenot; and business woman and community activist Ollie Tucker Osborne. This exhibit runs through March 31.
