The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Student Union construction is nearing completion as crews prepare for the students to return Jan. 12 for the start of the spring semester.

The renovation and expansion project began in late 2012. The new Union has about 178,000 square feet, or about 50,000 square feet more than the original structure.

Several student events are being planned for the end of January. A grand opening is expected to be announced later this spring.
