Secondary Education & Teaching
“I want to teach high school because a lot of the teachers I had in high school were people I needed at that time – and I wanted to be that for my students.”
You should major in secondary education and teaching if:
- You want to teach your favorite subject so your students can discover new passions.
- You like working with teenagers and want them to flourish in middle school or high school.
- You want to be that teacher who makes an impact on students’ lives.
Be the teacher who inspires.
With your degree in secondary education and teaching, you’ll be an effective educator. Immerse yourself in the subjects you love, and discover how to share that love with your students.
Learn the theories behind great teaching to create lesson plans, and teach them in local classrooms and camps. Introduce students to new ideas that transform their views of the world and help them build confidence at a critical age.

Life as a Secondary Education & Teaching Major
Work with Students Your First Semester
The College of Education partners with public and private schools to give you three levels of experience in the classroom. Observe classes, develop lesson plans, and teach entire classes through our Teacher Preparation Program.
In our year-long teacher residency program — part of our Teacher Preparation Program — you will co-teach, co-plan, and co-reflect with a mentor teacher to lead a classroom. This experience will give you the confidence and skills to command your own classroom after graduation.More about teacher residency
