Get in the Kitchen This Summer with Continuing Education

Several cooking courses are being offered for youngsters through UL Lafayette’s Continuing Education Department. These courses include:

• Beginner Cajun Cooking: Keep the tradition of Cajun cooking alive through children. Children will get hands on experience in preparing simple Cajun dishes with “a side of Cajun Culture.” They will learn the vocabulary of cooking, safety and sanitation in the kitchen, and also sample the food they prepared. The course is for ages 9-16 and the fee is $65. Course: #460001. It will be offered June 15 – June 16, Monday, Tuesday, 8 a.m. – noon.

• International Cooking: Explore the different cuisines of the world. Students will journey into the art of cooking by preparing dishes from Italy, British Isles, China, Mexico, India, Caribbean Islands, Australia and South America. Students will be given a brief history and common cooking methods of each region. After cooking the dishes, students will be able to taste and enjoy the foods they prepared. All cooks welcome from beginner to advanced. This course is for ages 9-16 with a fee of $65. Course: #460002. It will be offered June 15 – June 16, Monday, Tuesday, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.

• Now That’s Italian!: Mama Mia! Discover step-by-step how to make a full Italian meal as we explore the history and culture of regional Italian cooking. Class will include the art of making fresh pasta and a dazzling array of sauces. Dishes include ravioli, brushetta, foccacia, baked ziti and meatballs & spaghetti. This course is for ages 9-16 with a $65 fee. Course: #460003. It will be offered June 22 – June 23, Monday, Tuesday, 8 a.m. – noon.

• Beginner Desserts & Pastry Making: Kids will get hands on instruction in the art of dessert and pastry making. From after-school snack ideas to holiday desserts, students will learn how to prepare homemade cookies, pies, cakes and specialty pastries. Holiday recipes will cover Christmas, Easter, birthdays/parties, July 4th, Halloween and Mardi Gras. The course is for ages 9-16 and students are required to bring hat and apron. Fee is $65. Course: #460004. It will be offered June 22 – June 23, Monday, Tuesday, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.
