Graduates of the B.I.D. program go on to shape interiors in:

Path to Licensure

To become a licensed interior designer in Louisiana and many other states, you’ll need to complete:

  1. A first professional degree (B.I.D.)
  2. 3,520 hours of professional work experience under a licensed design professional (up to 1,760 hours may be earned during school)
  3. The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam

Our program meets the education requirement and helps you begin earning experience hours toward licensure. With this foundation, you’ll be eligible to practice professionally in Louisiana, 25 other states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Requirements

All students in the School of Architecture and Design must meet the admissions requirements set by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the College of Arts as a whole to be accepted into the architectural studies program. Learn more about the University's admissions requirements

In the School of Architecture and Design, you must earn a C or better in all courses. To major and graduate with a degree in interior design you must achieve and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA or better.

Students must submit a comprehensive portfolio of work for review as a requirement of their second semester in their sophomore-year studio. Each student’s portfolio will be evaluated for evidence of proficient abilities necessary for academic success in the next level studio course. The portfolio review includes an evaluation of students’ transcripts. Any student who does not demonstrate competency in the portfolio review will not be allowed to enroll in the next level studio course.

Student Achievement

Attrition and retention rate data were collected from the University’s institutional records. The University tracks students who begin as a first-time, full-time, degree seeking student within the Interior Design Program and tracks their success at the University. This method is a University-wide standard used for institutional accreditation and compliant with the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System of the National Center for Education Statistics.

It typically takes a full-time student taking approximately 15 credits per semester over four years to complete the degree program.
