Scholarships & Financial Aid

To be eligible for a Study Abroad Scholarship, you must have already applied for a program and paid the required $500 deposit.

The Scholarship Application can only be found on the Study Abroad Moodle page. Navigate to your Dashboard or under "My courses" at the top left of the screen. In case you cannot locate the UL Study Abroad Program Moodle page or if you are unsure whether you have successfully enrolled, please send us an email to studyabroad@louisiana.edu. Make sure to include your ULID in the email.

Applicants Must:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 to apply
  • Be a matriculating UL Lafayette Student

If you do not receive a scholarship, the refund policy mentioned under Payment Policies and Deadlines still applies. The deadline to apply is January 26th at 4 P.M. Scholarship recipients will be notified prior to the departure of programs.

Please note that the Study Abroad scholarship(s) do not cover the total expense of the program. We recommend that you check with your academic department and other outside sources for additional funding.

Gilman Scholarship 

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. The scholarship awards can reach up to $5,000. Eligibility for the Gilman Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens who are either currently receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of their application or can demonstrate that they will receive a Pell Grant for the duration of their study abroad program or internship (see eligibility for more information).

Gilman-McCain Scholarship 

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs (see eligibility for more information).

Financial Aid

Students participating in UL Lafayette's summer study abroad programs may be eligible for financial aid loans and TOPS.

  • Complete your 2024-2025 FASFA
  • Schedule an appointment with Theresa Domingue, Assistant Director for the Office of Student Financial Aid, at 337-482-6223 or email theresa.domingue@louisiana.edu
  • Make sure you are not on Financial Aid Suspension
  • Make sure you are not reaching your maximum hours to complete your degree
    • Bachelor’s Degree is 180 registered hours
    • Second Bachelors degree or teacher certification is 210 registered hours
    • Masters degree is 54 graduate hours
    • Doctorate degree is 108 graduate hours

Dependent Student    

  • Freshman - $5500
  • Sophomore- $6500
  • Junior/Senior-$7500    

Independent Student

  • Freshman -$9500
  • Sophomore-$10,500
  • Junior/Senior -$12,500

Graduate Student

  • $20,500 (Unsubsidized)

Financial Aid can only process aid up to the cost of the trip. The amounts are based upon what is given to them by the Study Abroad Office. There are some circumstances where Financial Aid is allowed to increase your budget if your airfare is not covered in the trip.

It is crucial to take initiative and schedule a meeting with the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.
