4 Things to Know About ProctorU
Proctored exams can feel intimidating for those considering online learning.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette uses online testing tools like ProctorU to help instructors maintain academic integrity while still giving students support and flexibility.
If your instructor requires proctored testing, here’s what to expect before your first exam.
1. How Much Does ProctorU Cost?
Proctoring fees depend on your instructor’s testing setup and the length of the exam, with costs generally ranging from $15 to $30.
Students should review their syllabus carefully and check with instructors about any anticipated testing costs early in the semester. Scheduling exams ahead of time can also help students avoid additional late scheduling fees.
2. Registration Before the Exam
Before taking your first proctored exam, students should take a few simple steps to make sure everything is ready ahead of time.
ProctorU is integrated into Moodle; your account is created automatically once you access the ProctorU link provided within your course.
Before exam day, students should:
- Download the Guardian Browser from Meazure Learning
- Run a system check to confirm your webcam, microphone and internet connection are working properly
- Have a government-issued photo ID ready for identity verification
A reliable internet connection is also important for online proctoring. When possible, students should use a wired connection instead of public Wi-Fi or hotspots to avoid interruptions during testing.
Taking a few minutes to prepare early can help make the testing experience feel much less stressful on exam day.
2. What to Expect During a Proctored Exam
ProctorU uses a combination of live proctors and automated monitoring tools to help instructors maintain academic integrity.

Before the exam begins, students may be asked to briefly show their testing environment. During the session, the platform monitors the testing process while students complete their exam.
Because exam settings can vary by instructor and course, students should always review course instructions carefully before test day.
3. Submitting Your Proctored Exam
Once you complete your exam, your proctor needs to verify that your test has been properly submitted before the session officially ends.
Students should wait until they are instructed to close the testing window or log out of the platform. If technical issues occur during the testing process, contact your instructor as soon as possible. Most problems can be resolved when instructors are notified early.
If you encounter any issues with the proctoring process whether using ProctorU or another service, please inform your instructor immediately.
