National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette governs the historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the “Divine Nine.”

The council fosters unity, leadership, academic excellence, and service among its member organizations through programs, community initiatives, and cultural traditions.

Founded on May 10, 1930, at Howard University, NPHC was established to create “unanimity of thought and action” among its member organizations. Today, the council continues that mission by promoting collaboration, equity, and excellence across campus and in the community.

Getting Started with NPHC

Membership intake for NPHC fraternities and sororities is a structured process that emphasizes education, leadership, and alignment with organizational values. Intake officially begins only after a student receives an invitation to join (typically from a chapter advisor) and attends the University’s required Anti-Hazing meeting presented by the Greek Deans.

Each semester, individual NPHC chapters may host informational sessions to introduce their organization, outline membership criteria, and explain the application process. Because chapters determine independently when they will conduct intake, opportunities may vary from semester to semester. Interested students are encouraged to attend NPHC-sponsored events, follow chapter social media accounts, and research each organization thoroughly.

Greek Code

All students interested in joining an NPHC organization must attend NPHC Greek Code, a mandatory educational program held at least once per semester. Greek Code offers an overview of NPHC history, values, and the responsibilities of membership, helping students make informed decisions about the fraternity or sorority experience. Meet the Greeks

NPHC hosts Meet the Greeks each September—an open, informal event where students can connect with members from each organization, learn about chapter values, and discover opportunities for involvement across campus.

Requirements

Basic requirements for joining any NPHC organization:

  • Must be a full-time student (enrolled in at least 12 hours in fall/spring semester)
  • Most organizations require at least a 2.5-2.75 minimum cumulative GPA for intake/initiation, so strive for higher when coming to LSU
  • Have a minimum of 12-36 cumulative LSU credit hours

Cost

In addition to fraternity/sorority dues and fees, a $67 assessment for Greek Membership per semester will appear on each Greek students’ LSU fee bill.

One-time expenses include new member fees, chapter dues, national dues and initiation costs. This could range from $800-$3000. Average semester costs range from $100-$300. The cost varies between chapters.

All NPHC members are expected to:

  • Maintain academic and financial accountability
  • Uphold chapter, council, and University policies
  • Support anti-hazing practices
  • Participate in mandatory educational programs and training
