Course Materials

Federal and state mandates require all digital course materials — whether delivered online or in person — to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility requirements.

Students are not required to file an accommodation request for these standards to be met. Accessibility is a baseline expectation for all course content, not an accommodation.

The Office of Distance Learning is your primary resource for course accessibility.

The Distance Learning team has built dedicated resources, tools, and training to support faculty in meeting course accessibility requirements. This page connects you to those resources and explains what to expect.

Course Accessibility Requirements by Content Type

  • Use built-in Moodle text editor heading styles for any page with sections
  • Add alt text to all images embedded in course pages
  • Use descriptive link text throughout — not ‘click here’
  • Panorama will flag heading, alt text, and contrast issues directly in the course
  • Tools required for course completion must be accessible to all students
  • Request a VPAT from the tool’s vendor before requiring student use
  • If a tool’s accessibility is uncertain, consult the Distance Learning team before assigning it
