Community Engagement

See how UL Lafayette nursing and health sciences students and faculty serve Acadiana through Project HOPE, free health screenings, and clinical partnerships.

Graduates of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences make up the majority of the Acadiana workforce in nursing, health information management, and health services administration. Our students start serving the community long before graduation.

Project HOPE

Project HOPE (Homeless Outreach Providing Essentials) is an annual event hosted by St. Bernadette Clinic. Students in NURS 340, Community and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, provide health promotion services to people experiencing homelessness and other underserved residents of Lafayette.

Students, faculty, and volunteers provide thousands of services to more than 200 people each year, including:

  • Vital signs monitoring and body fat analysis
  • Hearing, vision, diabetes, and stroke screenings
  • Education on hypertension, diet, stroke, and exercise

Clinical and community agencies from across Acadiana take part, and participants receive personal care kits, shoes, socks, food, shirts, and backpacks.

Wellness Wednesday

Nursing students run a free health screening clinic for UL Lafayette students, faculty, and staff, offering blood pressure, blood glucose, hearing, vision, and other screenings.

Clinical Partnerships

Partnerships with hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, schools, community health centers, and psychiatric institutions give our students the full spectrum of clinical practice opportunities, and support from these partners helps our students achieve their program outcomes.
