Dr. E. Joseph Savoie has served as president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette since 2008, leading the University through a period of remarkable growth and success.
A proud UL Lafayette alumnus, Dr. Savoie earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University, and later completed his doctorate in educational leadership and administration at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in New York.
Dr. Savoie’s presidency has been marked by significant advancements in academic excellence, campus infrastructure, research capabilities, and community engagement. In 2021, the University earned the prestigious Carnegie R1 classification, placing it among the top 3% of research institutions in the nation. Under Dr. Savoie’s leadership, the University surpassed $250 million in externally funded research for the first time, launched the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in its history, implemented a master plan for campus growth, introduced new undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and opened its Health Sciences Campus.
He has also overseen significant enhancements to campus, including the expansion and renovation of academic buildings, research centers, housing, athletics facilities, and the construction of a modern and more engaging Student Union.
A tireless advocate for higher education, Dr. Savoie has held numerous leadership roles at the state and national levels. He served on the cabinets of three governors. He was Louisiana’s commissioner of higher education for 12 years and championed accessibility and affordability for students.
Prior to his presidency, he served his alma mater as vice president for University Advancement, executive director of the Alumni Association, program director for the Union Program Council, student government advisor and adjunct assistant professor.
Dr. Savoie was married to the late Gail Heinbach Savoie, a 1977 graduate of the College of Education & Human Development. A teacher and accomplished artist, Mrs. Savoie was a proud ambassador for her alma mater. The Savoies have two children, Blair and Adam, and a granddaughter, Addison Marie.
