Community Outreach

See how UL Lafayette's Department of Health Sciences works with Acadiana health care partners, professional associations, and the community.

Partnerships with hospitals, physicians' offices, clinics, long-term care facilities, community health centers, and psychiatric institutions are vital to our programs. Their support gives our students the resources and real-world experience they need to achieve their program outcomes, and our graduates go on to serve those same communities.

Learning Alongside Our Health Care Partners

Local health care facilities and providers open their doors to our students every year:

  • Health information management students complete professional practice experiences at area hospitals and a management internship in health care facilities in Louisiana and other states.
  • Health services administration students complete a capstone internship with a health care organization in their own community, from hospitals and urgent care clinics to free health care clinics and public health departments.

Industry Leaders Shape Our Programs

Local health care leaders directly influence what our students learn through the Health Information Management Advisory Board, which helps faculty develop and revise program goals and curriculum and keeps the program responsive to change.

Serving the Profession

Our faculty and students stay active in the professional community. Faculty have served in leadership roles with the Louisiana Health Information Management Association (LHIMA), including as president-elect and as a Louisiana delegate to the American Health Information Management Association's House of Delegates. Students present at LHIMA's annual conference, and professional associations, including LHIMA, have supported our students through scholarships and resources.

Health Informatics in the Community

The Louisiana Center for Health Innovation (LCHI) puts the community first, developing research, education, and engagement activities that directly address Louisiana's health challenges. LCHI has partnered with the College of Nursing & Health Sciences and the Louisiana HIMSS Chapter to host a Nursing and Health Sciences Informatics Boot Camp for health care professionals.
