Grads prepped for 'hottest' jobs

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette prepares its graduates for the 17 hottest jobs reported Monday by Business Insider, an online business news site.

Those jobs range from teaching to civil engineering to graphic design.

Business Insider’s “hottest” jobs were determined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ projected job openings from 2010 to 2020. All 17 are entry-level jobs that require a bachelor’s degree and have a minimum of at least 100,000 projected openings during the decade. The jobs were included in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ “College to Career” report.

“The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects 8.5 million job openings in occupations that typically require a bachelors degree from 2010 to 2020. Business, education, and computer science have among the most opportunities, though there are good options in many career fields,” Business Insider reported.

Ellen Cook, the University’s assistant vice president for Academic Affairs, said UL Lafayette uses Louisiana Workforce Commission data and federal occupational forecasts “when proposing new or restructured degree or certificate programs, developing research agendas and initiating community outreach initiatives.

“Understanding current and projected employment is critical for alignment with the Louisiana Board of Regent’s ‘Master Plan for Public Postsecondary Education in Louisiana: 2011,’ as well as with the University’s 2009-2014 Strategic Plan.”
