Wear Red

For many years, Ragin’ Cajuns® students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans have worn red every Friday to show their support for the university. Each week, people put on their favorite Ragin’ Cajun shirt or hat and proudly showcase their connection to the university no matter where they live or work.

In 2006, the university began a formal Wear Red Day celebration, which is the annual “kick-off” of the tradition of wearing red every Friday. Each year, as part of this celebration, the university sponsors a contest for students, faculty, businesses, alumni and fans. On Wear Red Day—which is usually the Friday before the start of the college football season—individuals and groups of fans take photos of themselves Wearing Red and submit the photos to the university. In the past, entries have been sent in from several U.S. states, Canada, Paris and even Afghanistan.

At stake are bragging rights to be the Wear Red champion in various categories.

Winners are recognized each year with an on-field presentation at one of the home football games.

Past Wear Red celebrations have also included:

  • the dedication of Rex Street on campus as Wear Red Avenue
  • a Ragin’ Cajun SuperFan student competition
  • Ragin’ Cajun pizza party for a local elementary school
  • the design of the official university class ring
  • the opening of the Ragin’ Cajuns® Red Zone team shop
