| UL LAFAYETTE TO PRESENT 5 NIGHTS OF JAZZ |
||||||||||||||||||||
| The School of Music presents Jazz Week Nov. 8 - 12 at 7:30 p.m. in three locations on the UL Lafayette campus. The Jazz Piano Guild will meet on Nov. 8 in room 153 of Angelle Hall at the corner of McKinley Street and St. Mary Boulevard. Jazz Combos II and III will perform on Nov. 9 in the School of Music’s Ducrest-Gilfrey Auditorium. The UL Jazz Ensemble’s show will be on Nov. 10 in the Fletcher Hall auditorium next to Girard Park. The series continues on Nov. 11 with Combo I and the Jazz Guitar Quintet, and closes with Robert Willey, solo keyboard on Nov. 12 back in the auditorium. All concerts are free and open to the public. The Jazz Piano Guild was formed to provide an environment for professionals, teachers, amateurs, and students to perform, discuss and share experiences. The doors for the meeting on Nov. 8 will be opened as part of Jazz Week, providing the public an opportunity to ask questions and get to know the musicians in an informal performance situation. Combos II and III share the bill on Monday. Combo III will be performing a number of relaxed Brazilian-style songs, in addition to two swing tunes. Combo II will stray from the beaten path playing a collection of “unstandard standards” by Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Stanley Turentine. Tuesday night will be dedicated to the UL Lafayette Jazz Ensemble, a 19-piece big band under the direction of William Hochkeppel. They will present a variety of new and updated classics from the libraries of Maynard Fergusen, Doc Severinson, Pat Metheny, Gordon Goodwin, Thad Jones and Don Menza. The event will take place in the auditorium of the Fletcher Hall, making it possible to create a make-believe ballroom with an intimate jazz club mood. Limited table seating will be available down front for those who come early. Combo I and the Jazz Guitar Quintet will perform Wednesday night in the School of Music auditorium. Much of the combo’s program will be compositions and arrangements by member Timothy Carter. Jeff George, who directs and performs with the Jazz Guitar Quintet plans a diverse program, including “Peggy’s Blue Skylight” by Charles Mingus, “Norwegian Wood” by Lennon/McCartney, “The Quiltmaster in the Woods” (a Louisiana premiere by Fred Hamilton) and Summer Serenade, his own composition. The group is an unusual combination of five guitars, bass and drums. The series closes with a solo performance by Robert Willey, the School of Music’s media professor. “The Faculty Jazz group was unable to perform this semester, so I decided to take the date in the auditorium and play some original compositions on piano, mixed with performance electronics.” This will be the first opportunity since he joined the faculty to hear his mixture of Brazilian, minimal, new age and experimental music. The School of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in music theory/composition, performance, piano pedagogy, education, media and jazz studies. Jazz Week takes place twice a year to showcase the work of jazz faculty and students, and to provide the public an opportunity to hear unique forms of American music.
