| Overview |
 |
Our undergraduate program has been accredited by CSAB
and now ABET since 1987. This ensures
that our curriculum, faculty,
and facilities are nationally
competitive. We offer a BS degree in Computer Science with concentration
areas in Video Game Design and Development, Cognitive Science,
Computer Engineering, Information Technology, and Scientific Computing.
Majors' courses are taught by Computer Science faculty with MS or
Ph.D. degrees. In addition to regular courses, juniors and seniors
have the opportunity to work on independent projects with faculty
in more specialized areas, such as artificial intelligence, computer
graphics, database design, and human-computer interaction, as well
as apply for internships in industry. |

UL Lafayette has a long history in computer science
education. The first course in Computer Science was offered by Dr.
James Oliver in 1959. In 1960 Dr. Oliver obtained our first computer,
an IBM 1620, with National Science Foundation support. In 1961 he
started the first student chapter of the Association of Computing
Machinery (ACM) worldwide. The first Computer Science degree was awarded
in 1964. Our department was officially established in 1968. Today
we have more than 400 undergraduate majors. Our ACM
alpha chapter is alive and well; it is involved in social as well
as educational activities.
We also have an active IEEE
Computer Society chapter. The department also hosts the annual
Louisiana Computer Programming Classic LCPC
which is a programming contest for high school students. |
 |
We have several departmental scholarships
for computer science majors who have spent at least one year in our
program. These awards are made on the basis of scholarship and effort. |
